The most popular type of cooling system found in cars is known as "Liquid cooled", where the excess heat generated by the engine is removed by a liquid coolant.
The cooling system consists of a number of channels inside the engine block and head, a water pump which circulates the coolant mixture, a thermostat controlling the temperature of the coolant, a radiator to cool the coolant, and interconnecting rubber hoses to transfer coolant from the engine to the radiator and also to the car's heating/ventilation where the hot coolant is used to warm up the interior in cold conditions.
The excess heat created by the engine is transferred to the coolant, and then to the outside ambient air as it flows through the thin tubes in the radiator.

Once the fluid is cooled, it recirculates through the engine to absorb more heat. The water pump has the job of keeping the fluid moving through this system of plumbing and hidden passages. |
