The alternator converts mechanical energy from the engine into electrical energy, which is sent to the battery to maintain it's charge and provide electrical power to a car's electrical systems and components.
If the alternator fails, the battery will eventually drain, leading to starting problems and potential battery damage. |
Alternators generate electricity using the same principle as DC generators, namely, when the magnetic field around a conductor changes, a current is created.
Typically, a rotating magnet, called the rotor turns within a stationary set of conductor wires wound in coils on an iron core, called the stator. The field cuts across the conductors, generating an induced EMF (electromotive force), and the mechanical input therefore causes the rotor to turn. |
